Microsoft versus Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Unix; Which is better, or worse?

Which is better Unix Web Hosting, Linux? Windows?

The Internet is a lot of discussion tremoundous which operating system is best for web hosting. There are enemies anti-windows, there are FreeBSD fanatics and more. But what is the best? The truth is it depends on what you are doing.

The servers that run Web sites and server software is running on all of a computer program known as the operating system. If you are running a personal computer chances are you are running Windows ME, XP, NT or any other similar software. That’s the operating system of your computer. With web hosting servers also need an operating system and there are essentially three different versions of the competition.

The first version is Windows. Microsoft makes a special operating system for servers. This OS allows for true integration with Microsoft products and also allows Web sites to run Active Server Pages (basically computer scripts for dynamic content web site). Microsoft server also allows integration with its SQL database, one of the most powerful databases. The downside of Microsoft server software is that it costs several thousand dollars per server.

The second version is Linux. Linux is a common name for a variety of operating systems. Linux was, and is developed by a community of individuals who meet frequently to write the main part of Linux. After this main part is developed and continuously refined, additional parts are added to the program to customize the purposes for which the end user wants. A variety of companies market Linux and you may have heard of some of them: Red Hat, Debian, Slackware, etc. Linux is good, since it is compatible with the popular PHP programming language. It is also supported by some web hosters in that in general have a good security record and tends on average to be a stable operating system. Linux software is free.

The third version is the Unix-based operating systems. The latest version is mentioned here is very narrow compared to the versions of Linux. In fact, there are probably more than similiaries differences. The main difference is the story of how the two versions came into existence. Linux is an offshoot of the Unix operating system, where the Unix-based operating systems are Unix improvements itself. Linux is basically a cousin to Unix-based operating systems. The main Unix-based operating systems are FreeBSD and OpenBSD. The selling point of these operating systems is that they tend to be very stable once installed. The downpoint is that they are very technical to install. OpenBSD also has a reputation for very sure that in the past six years there was only one flaw in the software itself. But OpenBSD does not allow all that you have to sacrifice some flexibility for security. These operating systems also are free.

So what is the best? Well, it depends on what you needed. If you want the tightest security you can get then OpenBSD is probably for you. But it is very technical to install and you will not have a lot of ornaments. What about compatibility with all Microsoft products? Well Windows is best for you, but be prepared because it will cost a lot – other operating systems here all are free. What compatibity with PHP? Then look at Linux or FreeBSD. You see, not so much as what operating system is the best, but the best operating system is what you need to do.
