Six-Core Desktop Processor

Advanced Micro Devices is preparing a desktop processor with six processing engines, sources familiar with the plans of the company revealed. The new central processing units (CPU) will not be available this year but is likely to improve the performance of AMD desktop platforms sometime in 2010. AMD has kept a tight lid on its new hexa-core processor, so opening next week should be interesting. To recap what we have heard on the chip: going to earth in three iterations of the brand Phenom II X6 1035T, 1055T and 1075T, all of which are based on 45 nm and is compatible with AM2 + and AM3 sockets, so should work with existing motherboards - However, a BIOS update may be needed.

AMD processor code named Thuban is the desktop processor the company's first six processing engines. The chips will be compatible with socket AM3 infrastructure and integrated dual-channel PC3-10600 (DDR3 1333MHz) memory controller. It is very likely that AMD Phenom processors maintain Thuban mark II and chip design code-named Istanbul for servers, therefore, will have 3 MB of L2 cache (512KB per core) and 6 MB cache L3. The chips are made using the manufacturing process of 45 nm SOI.

Thuban is a star in the constellation Draco, and also means "dragon" in Arabic. The six new core chip should be compatible with existing infrastructure of AM3 (and, quite possibly, even with AM2 + infrastructure split power plane) Thuban be seen if it becomes part of the current high platform AMD desktop called Dragon, or power of the next generation of the company of Leo platform.

Leo AMD platform will be based on the AMD 890FX and 890GX core logic sets. The new chipsets offer better performance and functionality, for example, will support Serial ATA-600, 14 Serial ATA 2.0 and so on, but both will only be achieved by mass production in April 2010 and will be formally launched in May next year, according to market sources.

Provided that AMD has its Thuban ready by May 2010, the company can start shipping as soon as possible so they can compete for the top end desktop. Indeed, it is somewhat surprising that AMD can only produce six-core desktop chip about a year after it began selling six-core chips for servers. However, based on information currently available, AMD Thuban is due only in Q3 to 2010.

In current AMD not the position of its six core Opteron even making a single workstation and recommends customers among manufacturers of workstations to stick to dual-socket quad-core chips, due to its higher clock speeds high compared to the current six core processing units. Currently over AMD in the performance of six core chips operating at 2.80GHz, meanwhile, the fastest quad-core CPUs run at 3.40GHz.

With six physical cores, AMD will be able to demonstrate a fairly high performance on multiple tasks and applications they need to execute multiple threads simultaneously. Moreover, as future video games based on DirectX 11 start arriving, the advantages provided by six Thuban-core processors and Istanbul will be even more evident. Thuban processor will be presented at CeBIT 2010 (March 2 at 6) and correspondence with the launch 880g mentioned, OC Workbench Thuban claims will also be released on April 26. Thuban indicated earlier speculations will appear in May. The AMD 1090T Phenom II X6 six-core Black Edition CPU will sell for $US295
