How to calculate electricity bills

Date Added : August 31, 2010 | Views : 15891

Electricity bills are a monthly or quarterly fee that almost all of us face. Over several years this is an expense that can build up and that will cost you a fair amount so it's important that you have the best possible bill available. At the same time once you're paying your bill its useful to be able to calculate what you're paying. This is particularly useful as many electricity companies allow you to set your own payments, choosing how much you pay in each month based on what you predict you will spend. At the end of the year if you've calculated this incorrectly then your supplier will either pay you the difference or get you to pay them the difference. This means you might be paying a certain amount each month only to find out that your bill was completely different, and it also means you need to be able to calculate your bill in order to set a good monthly agreement. Another reason it can be helpful to calculate your electricity bill is that it can help you to split the costs between housemates if you are in shared accommodation. As such then you need to be able to predict future bills and calculate current bills in order to compare prices and get the best deal, to prevent shocks at the end of the month, and to help organise payments with other tenants.

When you are asked to predict what you will need to pay a month then you should look into what you're currently paying, or what your friends are paying elsewhere after a year. They will have a good idea for how much it costs for that amount of people in a house that size, and from here you should then be able to calculate what your house costs will be by looking at how many more or fewer people you have. If you know someone who has the same number of residents in their home then you can ask them what they've been paying monthly and use this as your guide when calculating your electricity bill. Remember though to take into account things like working from home, or hobbies that will tax your electricity bill.

At the same time though it's important to recognise that not all electricity providers will be the same price. Your quote then won't necessarily be the price you pay and so looking up quotes won't help you to find the best price necessarily as they will just be estimates. The price differences here are likely to be fairly small however so it's important to also bear in mind the reputation of the company and the quality of the service they provide which will be much more important than just the slight different in cost.

Using these techniques then it is possible to calculate your electricity bills before you sign up, and at any point you may need to while you're paying them. Make sure you do this regularly and ensure that you are constantly getting the best deal for your power.
