How can you help your criminal defense lawyer help you…

Date Added : September 9, 2010 | Views : 773

Usually the most common notion regarding criminal defense lawyers is that they will help you in your time of need. And this is true. But most clients don’t understand there are a lot of things they can do to aid their defense attorney during the whole trial process.

Most people usually don’t even think about it, but sometimes—helping your lawyer can mean the difference between a guilty verdict and an innocent one. And sometimes the things you can do are very easy to do—after all it is your freedom on the line here, so these tips are most definitely worth noting for everyone who lives in the United States…

Honesty is first. Honestly this sounds like a kindergarten anecdote—but is in EXTREMELY close proximity to reality. You’re criminal defense is your representitve in court. It is not only cricual you be honest with them—its necessary. If they aren’t privy to certain details of the case, that you held out while talking to them—it could injure your case greatly. Many times clients feel they can help themselves by lying to their attorney…this is the furthest thing from the truth. Rememebr—your talks with a criminal defense lawyer are always in confidence, so its important to not tell lies—no matter how small or minuet the details may be. Don’t hold out on your attorney!

Listen, please listen. If your attorney tells you to do something, do it. It doesn’t matter what it is. They’re asking you for a reason, and its important you follow their instructions. After all anything they ask you to do will ALWAYS be in your best interest.

Punctuality is key. Court is not school, you cannot walk into pre-trial hearings, meetings or trials late. This is VERY bad, and you will be looked down upon by judges. Also NEVER miss anything. Do not miss appointments with your lawyer—and do ANYTHING you can to not miss trials or hearings. You literally may see your freedom slip away from you if you do this. So it may be a given, but its VERY important.

Don’t get yourself into any trouble. You would think this is obvious, but many people charged with crimes who are out on bail—find themselves in the same illegal habits or doing things that could get them in trouble with law enforcement. So aim to become a good citizen, and live your life normally. Ask your attorney if you can make restitution for crimes you were charged with. Don’t get arrested a second time though, this will make your life more than hard.

Be respectful at all times. Remember—the legal system is run by human beings who have feelings and sympathies. By being disrespectful to judges, attorneys or prosecutors—you are narrowing your options. Judges may not want to cut you any slack if you were rude. And attorney’s may not work as hard on your case if you’re difficult. And prosecutors, do not be rude to them—the last thing you want is your prosecution to hold a personal grudge against you, not only that but your defense attorney will likely be less able to get a settlement from the prosecution. So please be sure to respect the whole legal process and all those involved, it may end up saving you.
