Contaminated Water Supplies

Date Added : January 21, 2011 | Views : 361

In December 2010 the Environmental Working Group released a study that showed 31 of 35 cities tested had hexavalent chromium, also

known as Chromium 6, a likely carcinogen. The biggest point here is not those places that have it, but the reasonable assumption that

most places do!

Earlier, an AP study reported a vast array of pharmaceuticals in the drinking water of at least 41 million Americans. These included

antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones. This study did not test for illegal drugs, but common sense

suggests that they are also in our water supplies. Studies in Spain and Italy have shown cocaine in the water. The important point

is that where they test, they usually find contamination.

A test of fish in one study showed the following drugs in the fish:

Dilitiazem, an antihypertensive - 0.13 nanograms per gram of fish

Diphenhydramine, antihistamine - 1.4 nanograms per gram

Carbamazepine, antiseizure - 2.3 nanograms per gram

Norfluoxetine, an antidepressant by-product - 3.2 nanograms per gram of fish

MTBE, a gasoline additive, has been shown to be in ground water and water supplies all over. Perchlorate, used in manufacturing of

many products, and a byproduct of rocket fuel, is in the water supplies at many locations.

How all these things will combine, and many of the effects of these contaminants are unknown.

Many of these contaminants are not regularly tested or treated by water supply organizations. While tests have indentified some

specific problems, and the EPA is looking into more regulation, the larger issue is that there are many chemical and organic

contaminants in the water. It is safe to assume that there are also others that haven’t been tested for. Waiting for individual

contaminants to be found, tested and regulated in your local supply means that your family is being exposed to contaminants with

unknown consequences in the meantime.

The best solution is to get a whole house water filter with a considerable amount of those filter materials that work on all the

categories of contaminants – chemical, organic and heavy metal. Reverse osmosis is not recommended for several reasons.

Many combine a whole house water filter with lots of filter material to filter those contaminant categories and last for years,

combined with a kitchen filter to remove fluoride and polish drinking water. The primary risk of fluoride is from ingestion, and

should particularly be addressed in your drinking and cooking water.

If a whole house system is out of reach, nearly any household can afford an excellent kitchen fluoride water filter, or other water

filter that works on the categories of contaminants.
